How-To Guide

This page will provide you with helpful instructions on how to perform certain tasks in Password Generator 2005 Professional.

Table of Contents

Note: button images shown on this page were rendered in Office XP theme, that's why they look differently from screenshots on this website (which were taken when program used Office 2003 theme).

Creating Password List

To create a new password list, follow these steps:

  1. Choose File / New in the menu, or click button on the toolbar.

New password list will be automatically created and a tab entitled 'Password List x' will be added to the tabbed MDI.

Opening Password List

There are two ways in which you can open password lists - from within Password Generator 2005 and from Windows.

To open password list from Windows, simply double-click on the password list file that you want to open (password lists files have 'pwl' extension).

To open password list from within Password Generator 2005, follow these steps:

  1. Choose File / Open... in the menu, or click button on the toolbar.
  2. In the dialog that popped out, select the password list file that you want to open.
  3. Click Open button.

As soon as you clicked Open button, new tab will appear in the tabbed MDI.

Saving Password List

You can save password list by following these steps:

  1. Choose File / Save in the menu, or click button on the toolbar.
  2. If you are saving the password list for the first time, a new dialog window will appear. In that dialog window you need to specify the name of the password list. After you did that, you need to click Save button. If you have saved the password list before, no dialog window will appear and the password list will be saved in the file you selected before.

As soon as you saved the password list, a little * sign will disappear from the password lists' tab, indicating that the password list hasn't changed since the last time it was saved.

You can also save password lists that you saved before under a different name. To do that, use Save as... command in the File menu.

Finally, you can save all password lists at once by clicking Save All button on the toolbar.

Exporting Password List

Password Generator 2004 has export functionality that allows you to save password lists in different formats. As of now the following formats are supported: text file, comma delimited values file, Microsoft Excel document, XML file.

To export password list, follow these steps:

  1. Choose File / Export... in the menu.
  2. New dialog window will appear. In it, type in the name of the file.
  3. Select the format you want password list to be exported to.
  4. Click Save button.

Selecting records by using menu commands

There are two menu commands that will select records - Select All, and Invert Selection. Select All command selects all records in the password list, while the Invert Selection command inverts current selection, selecting currently unselected records, and unselecting selected records.

To select records using Select All command, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Edit / Select All in the menu.

All records will then be selected.

To select records using Invert Selection command, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Edit / Invert Selection in the menu.

All records that weren't selected will be selected, and those that were selected will be unselected.

Selecting records by using record headers

Selecting records by using record headers is very simple, and you'll probably use this method most of the time, as it allows you to select any number of records in any order within a password list. The selection process works the same as with any Windows list. That is you can use both SHIFT and CTRL keys to control how the records will be selected. If you are not sure how the selection is done in standard Windows lists, consult Windows Help.

Moving records

To move records, follow these steps:

  1. Select the records you want to move.
  2. Choose Edit / (Move Up | Move Down) in the menu, or click either or button on the toolbar (depending on where you want to move the records).
  3. Perform Step 2 as many times as you need.

Note that when you move the records, selection does not disappear.

Cut Command

When you cut data from a password list, you delete it and put it into the clipboard. To cut records from password list, follow these steps:

  1. Select the records you want to cut.
  2. Choose Edit / Cut in the menu, or click button on the toolbar.

After you cut the records from password list, you will see that selection disappeared as well as the records that were selected.

When you copy records, you put them into clipboard without deleting them from the password list. To copy records, follow these steps:

  1. Select the records you want to copy.
  2. Choose Edit / Copy in the menu, or click button on the toolbar.

Once you copied the records to clipboard, you can paste them into Password Generator 2004's password lists or into other applications.

Paste Command

Paste command pastes records from clipboard right before the active record, or if there are any selected records, it will delete them, and put records from clipboard in their place.

To paste records from clipboard follow these steps:

  1. If you want to overwrite any records, Select these records.
  2. Choose Edit / Paste in the menu, or click button on the toolbar.

Once you did that the, the new records will be added to the password list right before the active record, and will be selected if Select items after paste and generation option is checked.
